§ Mr. Barry Jones
asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his estimate of the numbers of teachers currently being trained in Wales; how many were being trained in 1972; what is his estimate of the numbers for 1985; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Michael Roberts
In 1980–81, the latest academic year for which figures are available, there were 2,257 teachers on initial teacher training courses in Wales. The corresponding figure for 1972–73 was 7,035. It is not possible to make a reliable estimate of the number of476W students who will be undergoing this type of training in 1985, but the planned number of entries to such courses over the next three years are 690, 770 and 805.
