Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many representations he has received from hon. Members and from the general public, as well as professional organisations, regarding the level of nurses' pay; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We have received representations about nurses' pay from many quarters. On 10 December last my right hon. Friend had a meeting with the staff side of the Nurses and Midwives Whitley council and on 18 December my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister also met the staff side.

With regard to the present pay round, I refer the hon. Member to my right hon. Friend's reply to the hon. Members for Oldham, West (Mr. Meacher) for Fife, Central (Mr. Hamilton) and for Wood Green (Mr. Race) on 9 March.—[Vol. 19, c. 706–8.]
