§ Mr. StanleyAccording to the dwelling stock estimates made by local authorities in their HIP returns, the following 37 English local authorities owned over 40 per cent. of the dwelling stock in their areas at 1 April 1981:
Barking and Dagenham Norwich Barnsley Nottingham Bracknell Rotherham Chesterfield Salford Chester-le-Street Sandwell Corby Scunthorpe Crawley Sedgefield Derwentside Sheffield Durham South Tyneside Easington Southwark Gateshead Stevenage Greenwich Sunderland Harlow Thurrock Islington Wakefield Kingston-upon-Hull Walsall Knowsley Wansbeck Manchester Welwyn Hatfield Newcastle-upon-Tyne Wolverhampton North Tyneside In Hackney, Lambeth, Lewisham and Tower Hamlets, the dwellings owned by the boroughs and by the GLC comprised more than 40 per cent. of the total stock.
