HL Deb 11 March 1982 vol 428 c384WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many breath tests at the roadside to check on the presence of alcohol in the blood were carried out by the police in England and Wales under Section 8(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1972 in 1981, and what percentage of riders or motorists involved in accidents that figure represents.

The Earl of Avon

In injury accidents, in the 12 months up to September 1981, it is provisionally estimated that breath tests were required of 38,400 drivers of motor vehicles in England and Wales under Section 8(1) or 8(2) of the Act. This represents 10.7 per cent. of all drivers involved in injury accidents. Comparable information is not available for damage-only accidents, nor yet for the remainder of 1981.
