asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportion of the total revenue allocation accounted for by wage costs, for the National Health Service, the hospital and community services budget, and the revenue allocations to regional health authorities, for each financial year since 1974–75.

1. The figures for 1974–75 to 1980–81 used to calculate the percentages are derived from financial returns submitted by NHS authorities in England for the respective financial years.

2. The salaries and wages figures include employers' national insurance and superannuation contributions and relate to directly employed staff.

3. The National Health Service data relate to all NHS authorities including the Dental Estimates Board and Prescription Pricing Authority.

4. The remuneration and expenses paid to practitioners providing family practitioner services under contract with family practitioner committees has been excluded. Expenditure on FPC administration is included in the figures.
