HC Deb 28 July 1982 vol 28 c579W
21. Mr. Hugh D. Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total number of adults serving sentences in Her Majesty's prisons in Scotland at the most recent convenient date; how many are in punishment cells; and at which prisons.

Mr. Allan Stewart

On 17 July, the number was 2,802. There were seven prisoners under punishment in separate cells, which are, however, not exclusively for prisoners under punishment. Of the seven, four were in Peterhead prison, two in Barlinnie prison and one in Edinburgh prison. Three prisoners were in separate cells in Perth prison for reasons of good prison order and discipline and 11 prisoners were in separate cells in other prisons pending adjudication on reports for offences while in custody. Of the latter, nine were in Barlinnie prison, one in Perth prison and one in Peterhead prison.
