asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what contribution was made by the United Kingdom to the European university in Florence in the latest financial year; how many students attended this institution in the years 1981 and 1982; and what are the numbers likely to attend in 1983.

The United Kingdom's contribution to the European university institute was £572,000 in 1981–82 financial year. In the 1980–81 academic year there were 110 students at this centre of research and postgraduate studies; in the 1981–82 academic year there were 122 students. Student numbers in 1982–83 are not expected to show any increase over 1981–82.
