Mr. Teddy Taylor asked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) what steps he has taken to improve trading relations with Malaysia;

(2) if, in view of the benefits to the British economy of the preference traditionally given to the United Kingdom in trade and public purchasing by Malaysia, he will take steps to establish why this preference is now being removed.

Mr. Peter Rees [pursuant to his reply, 29 October 1981]: My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Defence discussed this issue with the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 5 October and the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur is in close touch with Ministers and officials of the Malaysian Government.
