HC Deb 30 October 1981 vol 10 cc493-4W

Mr. Lyell asked the Secretary of State for Trade what representations he has received concerning risks to the continuance of the export trade by United Kingdom pharmaceutical manufacturers and other export trades to the Sudan as a result of the proposed withdrawal by the Export Credits Guarantee Department of cover other than in cases where business is covered by confirmed irrevocable letter of credit; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Rees [pursuant to his reply, 28 October 1981, c. 352]: One representation has been received. ECGD has maintained cover for United Kingdom exports on credit terms up to 180 days since Sudanese debts to the United Kingdom were rescheduled in 1979, but the terms of cover for the Sudan are now being reviewed in the light of ECGD's deteriorating experience. It is probable that some restrictions will be imposed on future business with this market.
