§ Mr. Cryerasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many health and safety inspectors are seconded abroad; under what terms; to which countries; for how long; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Waddington[pursuant to his reply, 23 October 1981, c. 215.]: There are three health and safety inspectors seconded abroad. All are on loan: one in the Solomon Islands for two years, one in Bahrain for two years, and one is serving in the British embassy in Rome, initially for two years but since extended to four years. None of these is a charge on the Health and Safety Executive's budget. The HSE inspector at the British embassy in Rome is on detached duty to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, filling a permanent post as Labour Attaché in Rome. The HSE inspector in Bahrain is paid by the Government of Bahrain. The HSE inspector in the Solomon Islands is seconded to the service of the Government of the Solomon Islands under the overseas service aid scheme. The Department of Employment group continues to pay his salary but is reimbursed in full by the Overseas Development Administration.
