§ Mr. Carter-Jones asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many community and hospital-based midwives per 10,000 population and per 1,000 births in the years 1978, 1979 and 1980 there were for each area health authority; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Allan Stewart:The information requested is set out in the following table in terms of whole time equivalents. The table relates to 30 September in each year and includes qualified hospital and community midwives, student midwives, and an appropriate part of the time of combined duty nurses in the community. Recruitment to midwifery training remains high, though many of those trained do not subsequently practise as midwives.
