HC Deb 26 October 1981 vol 10 cc252-4W

Mr. Carter-Jones asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the perinatal, neonatal and infant mortality rates by social class and in the following age ranges (a) to mothers under 16 years, (b) mothers under 20 years, (c) mothers aged 20 to 24 years, (d) mothers aged 25 to 29 years, (e) mothers aged 30 to 34 years and (f) mothers aged over 35 years; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Allan Stewart:

The readily available mortality rates for 1979, which relate to legitimate births and stillbirths in five age bands, are given in the following table:

‡ Rates per thousand legitimate live births.

In many instances the numbers of deaths are relatively small and consequently the rates are of less significance; the actual number of deaths is shown in brackets after rates based on less than 10 deaths.

Mr. Carter-Jones asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the perinatal, neonatal and infant mortality rates for Scotland in 1980 by region and area health authority; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Allan Stewart:
