§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many redundancies have been notified to his Department in Wolverhampton for each month since May 1979.
§ Mr. Peter Morrison:There are no comprehensive statistics of redundancies. The numbers of redundancies, involving 10 or more employees, reported to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in the Wolverhampton travel-to-work area between May 1979 and September 1981 are as follows:
January — — 400 February — 210 559 March — 29 498 April — 1,288 205 May — 157 388 June 1,800 377 235 July — 343 104 August 251 223 †156 September — 357 †88 October — 751 — November — 330 — December 313 410 — Notes:* Prior to January 1980 figures relate to redundancies notified within the month concerned rather than redundancies taking place in the month.† Figures for February 1981 and later are not fully comparable with those for January 1981 and earlier because of improvements in data collection designed to secure a better coverage of reported redundancies which are actually expected to take place.† Provisional.
