asked the Secretary of State for Industry what was the increase in productivity achieved in the telecommunications division of the Post Office in each of the last five years; and what increase has been achieved by British Telecom at the latest date for which figures are available.

The annual productivity increase of the telecommunications division of the Post Office measured by the increase in real sales income per employee in the last five years is as follows:

1976–77 8.6
1977–78 11.4
1978–79 7.3
1979–80 3.6
1980–81 1.6
