Mr. Colvin

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the number and percentage of workers employed in businesses with (a) fewer than 200 employees and (b) more than 2,000 employees.

Mr. MacGregor:

The total of all private sector manufacturing employment in the United Kingdom in 1979 was 6.5 million, of which 1.5 million or 23 per cent. were employed in enterprises with fewer than 200 employees and 3.6 million or 56 per cent. in enterprises with more than 2,000 employees.
