asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many guarantees have been given by Government under the loan guarantee scheme; and what is their total value broken down into (a) new businesses and (b) existing businesses.

Mr. MacGregor:

By the end of September, 838 guarantees had been issued under the loan guarantee scheme in respect of £28.5 million of bank lending. Of this, 483 guarantees, covering lending of £15.5 million, went to new businesses and 355 guarantees, covering lending of £13 million, went to existing businesses.
