§ Mr. Whiteheadasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the rebate and extent of the penalties which will be incurred by universities which exceed their University Grants Committee target figures for students numbers in the academic year 1981–82, 1982–83 and 1983–84.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThe University Grants Committee's letters to universities of 1 July inform them of the student target numbers on which the committee's provisional indications of grant for 1983–84 have been based, and say that universities may treat these targets as applicable to 1983–84 or 1984–85. The committee has not set targets for intervening years. It will be for the University Grants Committee to consider whether these provisional indications of grant should be reassessed in the light of all the relevant circumstances.
