§ Mr. Whiteheadasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many representations he has received protesting at cuts in (a) the unversities and (b) the public sector of higher education; and what proportion of these protests have come from vice-chancellors and principals.
§ Mr. WaldegraveThe Department does not keep detailed records that would allow this question to be answered accurately. Ministers have received approaching 3,000 letters about the financing of the universities and a much smaller number about the public sector of higher education. The proportion of representations from vice-chancellors and principals is necessarily small, given the overall total of letters received.
