HC Deb 17 November 1981 vol 13 cc129-30W
Mr. Whitehead

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many representations he has received protesting at cuts in (a) the unversities and (b) the public sector of higher education; and what proportion of these protests have come from vice-chancellors and principals.

Mr. Waldegrave

The Department does not keep detailed records that would allow this question to be answered accurately. Ministers have received approaching 3,000 letters about the financing of the universities and a much smaller number about the public sector of higher education. The proportion of representations from vice-chancellors and principals is necessarily small, given the overall total of letters received.
