HC Deb 12 November 1981 vol 12 cc152-3W
Mr. Booth

asked the Secretary of State for Transport in which English cities the Transport Road Research Laboratory conducted surveys of axle weights of heavy lorries in 1980; how many vehicles were covered in the survey which took place in Hull; and if the survey covered fixed and articulated lorries.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

A survey of axle weights on a random sample of heavy goods vehicles was carried out by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory in May 1980 on the A63 trunk road at South Cave, near Hull. 55 per cent. of the 1,646 vehicles surveyed were articulated and the remainder were rigid. Subsequently, similar surveys were undertaken on the A5 at Wall near Lichfield, Staffordshire, in July 1981, and on the A2 near Barham, Kent, in September 1981. The data from these surveys are being analysed and the laboratory hopes to publish a report in 1982.
