HC Deb 12 November 1981 vol 12 cc172-3W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what consideration has been given to the safety aspects of the drug flagyl; and what information is given to doctors concerning its use.

Dr. Vaughan

Flagyl is used in the treatment of a wide range of serious infections. It is available on prescription in a number of formulations, all but one of which have been fully assessed under the provisions of the Medicines Act for safety, quality and efficancy. One tablet formulation has a product licence of right as it was monitored before 1971 and has not therefore been assessed.

Detailed information about the indications for use, dosage, precautions and warnings of possible side effects is included in the product data sheet which is supplied to all medical practitioners by the pharmaceutical company concerned.
