asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what consultations he has had about the proposal to replace direct cleaners with private contract cleaners; and if he will make a statement.

In the context of reducing Civil Service numbers and costs my officials have held discussions with the Civil Service Union about the possibility, most recently on 18 March.

I have decided to reduce the number of direct cleaners and have indicted that I am ready to meet the union's general secretary this month to discuss the implications of my decision.
