§ Mr. Kinnockasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science on what basis the figure of £11 billion a year for education spending which he used in his speech at the National Association of Head Teachers annual conference was calculated; what the figures for spending were in each part of the education service which was included in that total; and what were the equivalent figures for the total and the component spending terms of 1979 and 1980 survey prices.
§ Mr. Mark CarlisleThe figure was based on the planned cash provision for education in the current financial year as set out—with provision for science and arts and libraries—in table 1.7 of the Government's expenditure plans (Cmnd. 8175). The following table gives the requested breakdown:
