§ Mr. FowlerWe have decided to cut the lead content of petrol from 0.40 to 0.15 g/l. This is the lowest level we can require by law under present EC rules.
To go further than this is unlikely to achieve any early additional benefit because most current cars need high octane leaded petrol. This is why the development of low lead petrol is able to produce the dramatic and substantial reduction in lead emissions which the Government is concerned to achieve.
