Mr. Tom Benyon

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police recruits there have been in each of the last five years with (a) a university degree or (b) a legal or accountancy qualification.

The numbers of recruits with degrees were as follows:

1976 155
1977 170
1978 162
1979 324
1980 398

Details of recruits with legal or accountancy qualifications are not available centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
