§ Mr. Les Huckfieldasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether any police authorities or chief constables have given instructions that police vehicles are not to travel more than a specified number of miles during one operating shift; under what recommendation from his Department this has taken place; and whether he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrittanThese matters are for individual chief officers of police: and the Home Office has made no such recommendation. Information about steps taken in each police force is not readily available. I have no doubt, however, that chief officers keep under review the use of resources, including vehicles, and seek to combine effectiveness with appropriate economy.
