Mr. Ron Brownasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he proposes to recruit more staff to deal with tax evasion.
§ Mr. Peter Rees[pursuant to his reply, 10 November 1980, c. 46]: The number of staff in Inland Revenue and in Customs and Excise is being reduced as a contribution to the Government's policy of having a smaller, more efficient, Civil Service. But the deployment of staff in both Departments will continue to take account of the importance the Government attach to combating tax evasion.
