asked the Secretary of State for Industry if his Deparment was consulted by the European Commission on the grant of £4,645,000 to Carreras Rothmans for a new cigarette factory.

The Department provided information to the European Commission about the project in support of an application for assistance from the European regional development fund (ERDF). Contributions from the ERDF in respect of industrial projects are retained by Her Majesty's Government.
