HC Deb 13 November 1980 vol 992 c323W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will list in the Official Report the names of member States in the European Economic Community which charge a lower postal rate for letters sent to other member States than for overseas mail in general.

Mr. Adam Butler

Each of the six founder members charges its own inland rate for letters up to 20 grammes and for postcards when these are addressed to any of the other five countries. Since June of this year Denmark has applied the inland postal rate for letters—up to 20 grammes—and postcards addressed to other members of the European Community, but to date only West Germany is understood to have made reciprocal arrangements. Letters sent from the United Kingdom to the Republic of Ireland are charged at the United Kingdom inland rate, the same arrangement applying in the reverse direction.
