HC Deb 04 November 1980 vol 991 cc523-4W
Mr. Bidwell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department of the illegal immigrants discovered over the last recorded 12 months, how many who were deported had lived and worked in Great Britain for a period of, respectively, five, six, seven, eight, and nine years; and how many were allowed to remain.

Mr. Raison

I regret that this information is not available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.

Prison officers have an annual increment up to the end of the 5th year of service; and receive long service increments at the end of the 12th and 15th year of service.

In addition to these earnings, all officers are provided with rent-free quarters or alternatively a rent allowance of up to £13.32 a week. The value of the rent-free quarters is not subject to income tax; and the rent allowance, which is taxable, is "grossed up" at the end of each year by the amount of tax paid on it. Higher rates of pay and rent allowance apply in London, and some officers receive an allowance in recognition of certain specialist skills.

Mr. Bidwell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many illegal immigrants were deported over the last recorded 12 months period; and how many were allowed to remain.

Mr. Raison

From 1 July 1979 to 30 June 1980, 829 persons were removed as illegal entrants and 337 who entered the country illegally after 1 January 1973 were allowed to remain.
