asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many fine defaulters are currently serving prison sentences in (a) England and Wales and (b) Greater London.

Mr. Brittan

[pursuant to his reply, 13 May 1980, c.424]: On 31 March 1980, there were 1,011 fine defaulters in prison department establishments in England and Wales. Of these, 191 were in prison department establishments in Greater London.
