HC Deb 24 March 1980 vol 981 c439W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied that the Government's decision to recommend the increase in the proportion of textured vegetable protein in food from 10 per cent. to 30 per cent. will not have adverse effects upon the British home beef industry.

Mr. Buchanan-Smith

An expert panel of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy which advises my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services on the health aspects of nutrition has recommended that in institutional catering vegetable protein food may replace meat protein up to a proportion of 30 per cent. It will be for those concerned with institutional catering to decide how they respond to this recommendation. The effect, if any, on total meat consumption would tend to be spread over all meat supplies, including imports, and would be unlikely to have significant effects on the home beef industry.
