HC Deb 12 March 1980 vol 980 cc595-6W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social. Services what recent representations he has had from medical bodies and organisations that reflect the opinion that, in view of the health hazards of cigarette smoking, he should seek to ban the advertising of such tobacco products.

Sir George Young

In the context of the negotiations with the tobacco industry on measures to succeed the existing voluntary agreement, my right hon. Friend has received representations recommending a ban on such advertising from the British Medical Association, the Royal College of General Practitioners and a considerable number of local medical committees. The Royal Medical Colleges in Scotland have written on the same theme to my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State at the Scottish Office.
