HC Deb 07 March 1980 vol 980 cc370-1W
Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many young people have participated in the youth opportunities programme since 1 April 1979 in (a) the Northern region, (b) the Durham county council area and (c) the Bishop Auckland constituency.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 4 March 1980, c. 110]: I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that between 1 April 1979 and the end of January 1980, about 25,000 young people entered the youth opportunities programme in the Northern region. There were approximately 5.000 entrants in the Durham county council area.

I regret that it is not possible to give figures which relate exactly to the Bishop Auckland constituency, since statistics on YOP are collected by local authority district. However, the following information refers to the local authority districts which are wholly or in part within the constituency.

Entrants 1 April 1979 to 31 January 1980
Darlington 1,044
Sedgefield 349
Teesdale 9
Wear Valley 553
