HC Deb 06 March 1980 vol 980 c328W
Dr. Edmund Marshall

asked the Lord Privy Seal, for each of the electoral districts in the common-roll elections in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, what was the estimate of the total number of electors prior to the recent elections; and how many valid votes were then cast.

Mr. Luce

The information required is as follows:

Electoral district Estimate Valid votes
Manicaland 418,000 313,786
Mashonaland Central 211,000 174,930
Mashonaland East 568,000 632,440
Mashonaland West 311,000 282,932
Matabeleland North 360,000 396,505
Matebeleland South 196,000 172,108
Midlands 421,000 350,111
Victoria 398,000 326,717

In his interim report on the elections on 2 March, the Election Commissioner stated that the size of the poll suggested that the estimate of the electorate, which was based on the 1969 census, may have been too low and that percentage poll figures should therefore be treated with reserve.
