HC Deb 04 March 1980 vol 980 cc103-4W
Mr. Wheeler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the establishment for traffic wardens employed by the Metropolitan Police; and how many were in post in each month for the period February 1979 to February 1980.

Mr. Brittan

The present strength of the traffic warden service is 1,066, compared with a current ceiling of 1,800. The strength for previous months was as follows:

February 1979 1,282
March 1,256
April 1,226
May 1,206
June 1,198
July 1,184
August 1,170
September 1,140
October 1,113
November 1,104
December 1,114
January 1980 1,076

Mr. Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many traffic wardens are employed on the enforcement of parking and waiting restrictions in each of the London boroughs; and if he is satisfied with this distribution.

Mr. Brittan

The current strength of the Metropolitan Police traffic warden service is 1,066. Traffic warden areas are not coterminous with London boroughs, and I understand that in most cases the numbers employed in individual boroughs could not readily be identified separately. The deployment of wardens is a matter for the Commissioner.
