HC Deb 04 March 1980 vol 980 c114W
Mr. William Shelton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if, in view of the fact that the voluntary scheme for hotel and boarding house registration in England has achieved only 32 per cent. success, despite the fact that it has been in operation some five years, he will now consider implementing the provision of the Development of Tourism Act 1969 for a compulsory scheme of registration and classification.

Mr. Tebbit

The committee set up by the four tourist boards under the chairmanship of Professor Beavis of Strathclyde university to consider the issue of hotel registration has now reported. My right hon. Friend is awaiting the board's comments on the report before reaching any conclusions.
