Ministers in charge of Departments will be working out their plans for further reductions over the next few months, and it is too early to determine targets for individual grades.

§ Mr. Marlowasked the Prime Minister if she will initiate a policy for the early retirement of ineffective staff over the age of 50 years in the senior ranks of the Civil Service and their replacement by more enterprising and energetic staff.
§ The Prime MinisterThe Civil Service Department is considering new early retirement schemes, about which there will be full consultation with the unions.
