HC Deb 02 June 1980 vol 985 cc543-4W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children of personnel serving with Her Majesty's Forces are being supported in their education from the boarding school allowance and the day school allowance, respectively.

Mr. Hayhoe

I have been asked to reply.

Boarding school allowance is currently paid in respect of 19,787 children, day school allowance for 213.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current boarding school allowance and the current day school allowance payable for an individual child of a serving member of Her Majesty's Forces.

Mr. Hayhoe

I have been asked to reply.

The current maximum annual rates of boarding school allowance are as follows:

For the first and second child £1,509
For the third child £1,797
For the fourth and subsequent children £1,869

The day school allowance is £231 per year for each child.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children of personnel serving in the Diplomatic Service are being supported in their education from the boarding school allowance and the day school allowance, respectively.

Mr. Hurd

I have been asked to reply.

In November 1979, when the figures were compiled for the current academic year, allowances for attendance at boarding schools in this country were being paid for 1,681 children of staff serving with Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service.

Information about the number of children for whom day school allowance overseas is being paid is not readily available.

Mr. Kinnock

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current boarding school allowance and the current day school allowance payable for an individual child of the Diplomatic Service.

Mr. Hurd

I have been asked to reply.

With effect from the beginning of the current summer term, the boarding school allowance ceilings, within which fees at boarding schools in this country may be reimbursed, are as follows:

Boys senior schools £2,474 p.a.
Girls senior schools £2,375 p.a.
Boys junior schools £2,227 p.a.
Girls junior schools £2,138 p.a.

A day school allowance is payable only for education at authorised day schools overseas. There is no set rate for this allowance, which naturally varies from country to country.
