HC Deb 31 July 1980 vol 989 cc785-6W
Mr. John Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what evidence he

a table showing the average number of unemployed persons for every registered job vacancy for each region of England for July.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 29 July 1980 c. 674]: The following table gives the provisional numbers registered as unemployed in each region of England at 10 July and the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled at employment offices and careers offices at 4 July. Vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of this, and because of possible duplication between the separate figures for employment offices and careers offices, the two series cannot be added to provide satisfactory totals from which the required proportions could be calculated.

has of the extent of illegal working by schoolchildren; and whether there is evidence that this is a growing problem in the present unemployment situation.

Dr. Boyson

I have been asked to reply. The Department has no evidence on either of these matters.
