HC Deb 31 July 1980 vol 989 c785W
Mr. Heffer

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he is taking on Merseyside to ensure that work is available for school leavers and young people.

Mr. Jim Lester

[pursuant to his reply, 29 July 1980 c. 675]: The Government's economic policies are designed to bring down inflation and create an economic climate in which investment and growth will make for more permanent jobs. In the meantime, the Government have agreed to expand the youth opportunities programme on Merseyside by 25 per cent. in 1980–81. Community industry for particularly disadvantaged young people and the special temporary employment programme for young people over 18 will continue to make a significant contribution on Merseyside.
