HC Deb 28 July 1980 vol 989 cc521-2W
Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Trade how many countries' exports to the United Kingdom are subject to restrictions, either formal or informal, in the case of (a) clothing and (b) footwear, other than rubber and canvas; and which are the countries in each case.

Mr. Parkinson

[pursuant to his reply, 17 July 1980 c. 637]: Imports of clothing from 34 countries are subject to restrictions. The countries concerned are Albania, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Cyprus Czechoslovakia, German Democratic Republic, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Macao, Malaysia, Malta, Mauritius, Morocco, North Korea, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Vietnam, USSR, Yugoslavia. There are restraints on imports of leather footwear from Czechoslovakia, Poland and Romania; all footwear from South Korea; and all non-leather footwear from Taiwan. There are fewer suppliers of foot- wear than of clothing, and the restraints on the sources I have mentioned cover some 50 per cent. of total low-cost imports of footwear.
