HC Deb 22 July 1980 vol 989 c131W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, without involving disproportionate cost, he will give whatever information may be readily available for any stated period of time as to the number of prisoners in Her Majesty's prisons who have received treatment for sexual problems.

Mr. Brittan

A special exercise was carried out in 1978 to establish the extent to which chemical treatment had been offered to prisoners to help reduce the strength of their sexual urges. Over the period November 1975-November 1978 a total of 138 inmates had received one or more types of chemical treatment at 18 establishments: 29 had been prescribed synthetic oestrogens, 80 cyproterone acetate and 36 benperidol, 15 male inmates had operations to remove breasts and two others underwent the operation after being released.
