§ Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Lord Privy Seal which Government Her Majesty's Government recognise as having effective control of Taiwan; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BlakerAs my right hon. Friend announced in his reply of 25 April to my hon. Friend the Member for Westbury (Mr. Walters)—[Vol. 984, c. 277–78] —Her Majesty's Government no longer accord recognition to Governments but continue to recognise States in accordance with common international doctrine. We do not recognise Taiwan as a State, nor do we regard the authorities in effective control there as a Government.
§ Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Lord Privy Seal what arrangements have been made by his Department to afford appropriate hospitality for the Minister of Economic Affairs of Taiwan during his current visit to the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. BlakerThis was a purely private visit. Her Majesty's Government were in no way involved in its organisation. Her Majesty's Government do not regard the42W nationalist authorities on Taiwan as a Government. There was therefore no question of offering official hospitality to Mr. Chang.
