§ Mr. Nicholas Wintertonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list all the establishments under Government control that experiment upon animals in the United Kingdom; what species of animals are experimented upon at each establishment; and how many animals, listed by species, died while being experimented upon at each establishment in 1979.
§ Mr. RaisonI refer my hon. Friend to the answers given to my hon. Friend the Member for Holland with Boston (Mr. Body) on 10 June by my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, on 19 June by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Educa-740W tion and Science and on 20 June by my hon. Friend the Minister for Health.
A list of places registered under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 is placed annually in the House of Commons Library; the latest such list relates to February 1980. To identify on that list all the establishments which are under Government control would involve disproportionate cost.
As my hon. Friend knows, statistics of experiments on living animals commenced in 1978, under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876, by species of animal, are published in "Statistics of experiments on living animals: Great Britain 1978" (Cmnd. 7628) and he may find of interest the analyses by type of registered place given in tables 12 and 13. It is not the practice to give information about the work of individual establishments; as explained on page 6 of Cmnd. 7628, licensees submitted their returns in confidence.
