§ Mr. Cryerasked the Secretary of State for Employment how many part-time medical advisers are employed by the Health and Safety Executive; and what steps are taken to ensure that such employees are not employed by other persons so as to create conflicting loyalties.
§ Mr. MayhewThere are 30 part-time employment medical advisers (EMAs) employed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) within its employment medical advisory service (EMAS). All candidates for appointment as part-time EMAs are required to declare any industrial appointments they hold when applying for a post with the HSE. Any industrial appointments subsequently offered to part-time EMAs are also required to be declared and the permission of the HSE obtained before an offer is accepted. The HSE is not aware of any case 739W where there is a conflict of loyalties. EMAS commenced a review last year of all industrial appointments held by part-time EMAs, which is as yet uncompleted.
