§ Mr. Jim LesterAt 10 January 1980 the provisional number of people registered as unemployed in the Leyton employment office area, which includes Walthamstow, was 4,188 compared with 4,410 in January 1979, a decrease of 5 per cent. The January 1980 figure may be affected by the introduction, in September 1979, of fortnightly attendance and payment of benefit. Estimates are not available for individual local areas, but, for the country as a whole, the figures are about 1½ per cent. higher than they would have been under weekly attendance.
