HC Deb 19 December 1980 vol 996 c324W
Mr. Cowans

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will indicate which way the British delegation to the United Nations will cast its vote on the motion to oppose the present regime in Chile.

Mr. Ridley

I assume that the motion to which the hon. Member refers is the recent United Nations General Assembly resolution expressing concern at the continued violations of human rights in Chile. This resolution was passed by the General Assembly on 15 December. The United Kingdom delegation voted in favour.

Mr. Canavan

asked the Lord Privy Seal whether, in any public statement, any distinction has been drawn by any Foreign Office Minister between the nationality status of Miss Clare Wilson and Dr. Cassidy, both subjected to torture by the Chilean authorities; whether this is reflected in the representations made to the Chilean Government on Miss Clare Wilson; and what further representations he is making to Chile in this case.

Mr. Ridley

I refer the hon. Member to the reply given on 3 December to the hon. Member for Cardigan (Mr. Howells).

Mr. Andrew F. Bennett

asked the Lord Privy Seal, further to his reply to the hon. Member for Vauxhall (Mr. Holland) on 20 March 1980, if he will instruct Her Majesty's ambassador at Santiago to raise with the Chilean authorities the question of their freely allowing the Christian Democrat President, Andres Zaldivar, to return to Chile.

Sir Ian Gilmour

No. We do not consider that it would be appropriate for Her Majesty's ambassador to intervene on this matter.
