asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the EEC Commission has authorised payment of EEC funds in cash or in kind to directly or indirectly promote or otherwise support an international congress to be held in Palma, Majorca on 28 to 31 May 1981 for members of the Association of Former Trainees of the European Communities; and, if so, what is the total cost of the operation to the EEC.

Mr. Lawson

Provision is included in article 2.9.2 of the Community budget for subsidies to meet the expenditure incurred by Community participation in the organising of congresses, occasional meetings and activities of a European or a scientific character of value to the Community. The amount entered for this purpose in the 1981 draft budget is 207,000 European units of account—about £130,276 at the rate of exchange used in the 1981 budget estimate of £1 = 1.5889 EUA. The administration of these funds is the responsibility of the Commission and the answers to the hon. Member's question are not known to Her Majesty's Government.
