HC Deb 08 August 1980 vol 990 cc367-8W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will require local authorities, under the regulations to be made under the Education Act 1980, to publish information as to the nature of sex education given in a school, if any, and the arrangements made for a parent to withdraw his child from any such sex education if, having received the information, the parent disapproves.

Mr. Macfarlane

My right hon and learned Friend will shortly be consulting interested parties in respect of draft regulations proposing that authorities be required to publish information about the ways and contexts in which sex education is provided in their schools. We shall also be considering what further guidance to give to authorities about other aspects of sex education in schools, including the question of excusing attendance for those pupils whose parents object.
