asked the Minister of Transport if he will break down the figure of £157.8 million for road administration in 1978–79 in England, giving the breakdown between central and local government for the following (a) staff salaries, (b) other staff expenses, (c) materials, (d) office overheads and (e) other expenses.

Mr. Fowler

The figure referred to represents the whole of the administrative costs local authorities attributed both to roads and to their other transport activities in 1978–79. No direct expenditure by central government is included. The figure comprises £104 million for employee costs and £53.8 million for running expenses. A breakdown in the form requested is not available.
